WORKING TO ERADICATE FGM IN SIERRA LEONE

OUR WORK IN SIERRA LEONE

KAWDA is a grassroot organization located in Lumley, Freetown, Sierra Leone.  The founder,  Ann-Marie F Caulker, is an outspoken anti-FGM activist in Sierra Leone.  She brought the children You see in the pictures from various provinces, and gave them a chance at a brighter future by offering them a place to live and basic education.  The children escaped FGM because of Ann-Marie's intervention, but they are disowned by their families as a result.  SWF International supports KAWDA's work and funds sessions of sensitization regarding human rights violations which are held around the country.  The organization educates families about the harmful consequences of FGM and encourages parents to stop the practice.
Proceeds from the EGG Campaign will further enable us to provide the basics for the children's education and build an actual school where they can live and learn.

Katelina Clinic was founded in 1984 by Dr. J. K. George.  Although it serves the community of Tombo and parts of Freetown, the clinic lacks basic supplies.  SWF International partners with Dr. George to bring basic health care to men, women and children who are in desperate need.  Dr. George has been providing free medical services for the past 25 years, including during the decade of civil war.  His efforts have been unnoticed by the government of Sierra Leone and the international community.  Assisting women who had complications from FGM has been at the forefront of the doctor's agenda.  SWF International strives to supply the clinic with basic disposable surgical instruments, mosquito nets and bandages.  The EGG Campaign aims to assist Katelina Clinic to expand to a third location, in Hestin, where there is no medical facility of any kind.
