Working with Members of Parliament towards legislature
SWF's founder, Dr. Nina Smart interviewed members of the Parliament of Sierra Leone about the absence of anti-FGM legislation. The information received helped shape SWF programs that work with local anti-FGM activists to end this harmful traditional practice. MPs shun public discussions on FGM to avoid political suicide. FGM holds a central role in the identity formation of the majority of Sierra Leonean women, and threatens the political career of MPs who seek reelection.

Engaging Religious and Traditional leaders in FGM discussions
SWF invites religious and traditional leaders in its communities to engage with families and activists discussing the harmful effects effects of FGM. Involving religious and traditional figures is expensive, yet necessary. Insisting that MEN are active in the FGM discussion continues to be a priority for SWF and local partners. Debunking false religious beliefs of FGM being a religious requirement contributes to lasting change in the ideology surrounding FGM and its need for continuity.
